Voices from the Land of Trees (Smokestack, 2007)

Abigail Zammit was born in Malta and moved to England to study for an MA in Creative Writing after gaining a BA (Hons) in English, a Post-Graduation Certificate in Education and a Masters degree in English Literature from the University of Malta. She taught at Stoke-on Trent Sixth Form College and carried out publishing work experience with Icon Books, Sweet and Maxwell, Ebury Press and Traveller Magazine. She now lectures at G F Abela Junior College in Malta.

Voices from the Land of Trees is Abigail Zammit’s first full length poetry collection and was written after living and working in Guatemala for six weeks in 2003. It tells the story of thirty-six years of civil war and the genocide of 200,000 Indians by using different voices to explore the viewpoints of civilians, missionaries, soldiers, guerrillas, students and journalists and a gradual recovery from these events in the face of official silence and collective amnesia.

“Great skill… extraordinary sensitivity, bravery and generosity,” Penniless Press
