Mary Johnston’s first language is Doric (Scots) and English is a second. Her publications are usually accompanied with a CD of her reading her work. She
aims to continue and preserve the Doric language. Ring O Sangs was runner-up in the Callum Macdonald Memorial Award in May 2009 and translates German songs into Doric. Similarly, Smaa Spangs also translates from German to Doric.. She was shortlisted for the McCash Poetry Prize in 2004 and has won Diplomas for Excellence in the Scottish International Poetry Competition in 2002 and 2004.

Previously a teacher, Mary Johnston is now able to write full-time and is working on Doric versions of a selection of Grimm’s Tales and a Doric version of the story of the Garden of Eden.
